A clear look at what the Retro Standard Newborn Prefold Bundle contains, who it suits, and when a different newborn cloth diaper starter makes more sense.

Quick answer

The Retro Standard Newborn Prefold Bundle is a bulk starter package built around 24 prefolds plus 8 newborn covers, and you choose the print or color mix yourself. It makes the most sense if you plan to cloth diaper from the newborn stage and want one purchase that covers the core diaper stash.

Why the prefold size choice matters more than the prints

The bundle lets you pick any in-stock prints or colors, which is the fun part, but the size decision is the one that affects daily use. You choose size 1 or size 2 prefolds, and that choice should follow your baby's current stage rather than the pattern you like most. If you are buying before birth, think about how long you expect to use the newborn setup before moving to a larger size.

Because the bundle is sold as a bulk package, it rewards planning ahead. Buying 24 prefolds at once keeps you from running short between washes, but it also means committing to a size. Check the size you are ordering against your baby's expected weight and stage, and treat the print selection as a separate, lower-stakes decision.

What the bundle assumes you already have

A prefold bundle covers the absorbent layers and the newborn covers, but it does not replace every cloth diapering accessory. You will still need a way to fasten prefolds, a pail or wet bag for storage, and a wash routine that works for your water and machine. If you are starting from zero, budget for those extras alongside the bundle rather than after the first week.

This is also why the bundle is best treated as a core purchase, not a complete registry. It gives you the repeat-use items that make up most of a newborn stash, and you fill in the smaller pieces based on how you plan to wash and store diapers.

When a smaller or different bundle is the better call

If you are unsure whether cloth diapering will stick, a full bulk bundle is a big first commitment. A smaller starter set lets you test the wash routine and the fit before buying 24 prefolds. Likewise, if you are diapering twins or plan to use a mix of diaper styles, the bundle's single-size structure may not match how you want to build your stash.

The bundle also assumes you want prefolds specifically. If you prefer an all-in-one or a different closure style, the prefold format is the wrong foundation no matter how good the bundle value is.

Decision rules for buying this bundle

Choose size 1 if you are diapering a newborn now: Size 1 is the newborn-stage prefold option in this bundle. Pick it when your baby is at or near the newborn stage and you want the absorbency to match that period. If you are buying before birth and plan to start cloth from day one, size 1 is the default choice.
Choose size 2 if you are past the newborn stage: Size 2 is the larger prefold option. Pick it if your baby has outgrown newborn sizing or if you are building a stash for the months after the newborn phase. Do not size up just to get more months of use if the fit will be bulky on a small baby.
Buy the bundle if you want one core stash purchase: The 24 prefolds and 8 newborn covers give you the repeat-use pieces of a newborn stash in a single order, with print and color choice included. Confirm you have fasteners, storage, and a wash plan before checkout so the bundle is ready to use.
Skip the bulk bundle if you are still testing cloth: If you have not settled on prefolds or your wash routine, start smaller and upgrade once you know the format works for your family.
